Member of Indie Band DIIV Under Fire for Alleged Anti-Gay, Racist Remarks

The bassist for the critically acclaimed indie band DIIV came under fire this weekend after a blog discovered he allegedly made anti-gay, racist and misogynist comments on the the message board 4chan, DIY Mag reports.
According to the Tumblr, Sexism in Music, DIIV's bassist, Devin Ruben Perez made several offensive remarks on the public, and mostly anonymous, music discussion section of 4chan, called /mu/.
The site claims Perez made his comments under the moniker "Devin-Chan" and, according to screencaps from Sexism in Music, called Jake Gyllenhall the "biggest fucking faggot ever," after he was asked what he thinks about the actor's role in the film, "Donnie Darko."
Perez allegedly took aim at the lead singer of the feminist punk band Perfect Pussy, Meredith Graves, saying she is "a bitch because she sucks," and said that she is "not my type AT ALL. Sorry. 1/10."
He also allegedly went after anonymous music producer Zomby, saying, "That nigger is the biggest troll ever."
Sexism in Music also found that Perez also allegedly used anti-gay and racist slurs on 4chan's video game discussion section.
After Perez found out about the blog's reports, he attempted to defend himself, specifically about his comments regarding Graves.
"She IS a bitch though. She's really fucking mean," he reportedly said. "I never did anything to her and she's always looking for ways to attack me and my friends, like a rabid FEMALE DOG."
According to Vice's music blog Noisy, Perez added: "I honestly don't regret saying anything that I did." He also expressed frustration that Sexism in Music are reacting negatively and that they do not understand "4chan lingo."
It has been well documented that users of 4chan often throw around hateful worlds like "faggot" and the n-word to refer to each other, so much so, that many of the message board's users are numb to the words' hateful meanings and connotations.
Noisy also reports that 4chan users started to taunt Perez by threatening to send the thread to indie music review website Pitchfork and other news outlets. Perez urged them not to, saying he didn't want to affect his band mates, especially DIIV's front man Zachary Cole Smith, who is dating indie / pop singer Sky Ferreira.
"I don't want any of this to come down on Cole and Sky," Perez allegedly said. "Their lives are hard enough as it is."
Since the comments came to light, Smith took the band's Twitter account to comment on the incident, saying he was "disgusted" and "angry"
"I will never EVER tolerate sexism, racism, homophobia, bullying, or bigotry of any kind. I'm doing everything to get to the bottom of this," he wrote on Dec. 13. "I'm so fucking disgusted. so fucking angry."
He then retweeted Twitter users' responses to his tweets and the incident.
"@DIIV you're a heroin addict, man. your opinion as to what is acceptable means fuck-all lol," one user wrote, which sparked Smith to write: "I notice the disease of addiction (which kills almost 70k people/year in the U.S. alone) is still acceptable grounds for persecution."
Update: Later Sunday, Smith took to Twitter again to comment about his band mate's alleged remarks:
"Yes, I understand it is 4chan 'lingo.' But everybody who types that word knows what it really means and how much violence is attached to it," he said before adding:
"All media who covers this is implicated in propagating spewings of an underbelly internet culture who r numb to the violence of their words. I'm hurt by the whole situation but especially by opportunistic media forming a sentence 'DIIV ...sexist/racist' just for cheap click fodder. There are actual humans behind all this. One woman is now being called a 'b****h' across many national music sites. This isn't music news."
The band's latest Facebook post (Dec. 9) appears to be a support message for those protesting the Eric Garner verdict.
Back in September 2013, Smith and Ferreira were arrested in Saugerties, New York, for possession of heroin.
DIY Mag points out that DIIV is currently working on their follow up album to their critically acclaimed self-titled 2012 debut.
