Brad Pitt Reveals Childhood Homophobic Bullying and Whether He's 'Had a Gay Experience'
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Chatting with his friend Dax Shepard on Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast, Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt talked about relationships, recovery, being bullied, and whether he's "had a gay experience," UK newspaper the Daily Mail reported.
Pitt also revealed who he would definitely not sleep with among the male set.
Things got spicy quickly: A little more than five-and-a-half minutes into the episode, Shepard (who had introduced Pitt on the show as his "dream boyfriend") began to ask a question: "Given the way you and I met – "
"Sexually, you mean?" Pitt interrupted.
" – does it make you nervous?" Dax was referring to their shared history with Alcoholics Anonymous.
Though Shepard might not seem an impossible match for the 61-year-old Pitt, the "F1" star assured Shepard, "You know, I've never had a gay experience. I kind of missed that window."
"But if I did," Pitt added...
"Yeah?" Dax asked.
"It wouldn't be you."
Shepard pretended to take that hard. "Oh man, you had me," the Mail quoted him saying. "I was like, 'Wow, he's going to say it.'"
Pitt went on to tease Shepard that if here were bi-curious, the writer-director-actor would be way down in his list of potential hookups – "maybe 14th, or 15th," Pitt teased.
Shepard – whose previous "Armchair" episode was focused on the topic of "Foreign object in butt" – fired back that Pitt would "need to build up to me," and added, "I do recommend you start with some starters" – though he did not suggest anyone specifically for the role.
The two went on to reminisce about how, early in their friendship, they shared a "romantic" helicopter ride.
Pitt praised the experience of being "open" and "vulnerable" in the AA setting, and disclosed how having talked publicly before about attending AA meetings got him in trouble with someone in the organization "because it's supposed to be anonymous." All the same, he wasn't shy about reiterating what a positive and constructive experience AA had been for him.
The two also discussed their cinematic man-crushes, name-checking Paul Newman among others.
Though he isn't gay, Pitt described being taunted in his youth by bullies who hurled homophobic slurs at him and his brother, the Mail detailed.
The "Babylon" star shares six children with former wife Angelina Jolie. Their divorce and the legal battles around a winery they owned – and which Jolie sold – were the stuff of tabloid headlines for years.
But that split propelled Pitt to AA. Shepard recalled wondering how someone as famous as Pitt would manage to connect with the group. What turned out to be meaningful for Pitt, though, was hearing about "the little wins" that others in the group would talk about.
Pitt explained that despite his superstar status, he wasn't that worried about joining AA and chose to embrace the experience whole-heartedly. Pitt explained, "I am a stubborn fuck, but also, when I've stepped in shit I'm pretty good about taking responsibility for it and owning up to it."
Besides, he went on to add, he was "desperate."
Agreed Shepard: "Your hair has got to be on fire before you're like, 'Yeah, I'll go hang with a bunch of dudes and talk about emotions."
