Jonathan Bennett, a veteran of Hallmark Christmas movies and star of the channel's groundbreaking gay-themed film "The Holiday Sitter," dropped a major reveal about "The Groomsmen," an upcoming trilogy of rom-coms that focuses on three best friends "of different backgrounds, cultures, and sexual orientations," per the Hallmark Channel's description.
The big news: One of the trilogy's major storylines will involve a same-sex wedding... and the nuptials will take place in Greece.
Bennett, who is executive producing the three interrelated films as well as starring, told People Magazine all about the upcoming project while attending San Diego Comic-Con.
The actor/producer was fully conscious of how the upcoming trilogy will set a precedent for the channel, which has already incorporated some queer content into its offerings, not only with 2022's "The Holiday Sitter," but also with another Bennett-starring project, "Christmas on Cherry Lane," from 2023.
"The Groomsmen" trilogy marks "the first time we've had a gay wedding on Hallmark as the lead storyline," Bennett enthused. "And that's a huge move for the gay community, so they can see themselves represented in these stories."
People notes that "The trilogy follows the lives and romantic relationships" of a trio of characters: Danny, played by Bennett; Pete, played by B.J. Britt; and Jackson, played by Tyler Hines. Each chapter takes the pals to a different exotic locale.
"We got to shoot my character Danny's storyline in Greece," Bennett told People. "And when you put me Tyler Hynes and B.J. Britt in Santorini, jumping off cliffs, it's literally like paradise, and a dream come true because we got to film a gay love story in Santorini for Hallmark Channel."
The triptych is generating excitement beyond its queer content; as Variety noted, the trilogy comprises the "first set of romantic comedy movies told from the male perspective" as each installment "follows the lives and romances of three longtime best friends who stand next to each other on the biggest days of their lives."
"And these are not just your usual Hallmark-cozy nups," TV Insider advised. "The best buds' weddings take them across the world to the spectacular vistas of Greece, Italy, and Bulgaria and the production values are through the roof as they deal with complex relationships, love interests, and family members with all the heart, humor, and charm fans have come to expect from the brand."
