Lady Bunny Shades Mama Ru's Online Book Store for Selling Homophobic Titles. 'Those Ain't MY People, Ru.'

Reading Ru is fundamental for Lady Bunny. Never one to hold back, the drag superstar called MamaRu out on social media for her latest venture into "rainbow capitalism."

Concurrent with the release of her latest book – a personal account she calls "The House of Hidden Meanings" – RuPaul announced a partnership with a web commerce site with a focus on queer books. The megastar is also finding herself being shaded by drag legend Lady Bunny.

In a pointed social media post (seen above in Instragram), the old school drag star did not mince words in her criticism of Mother Ru about her recent partnership to a commercial web site that sells books aimed at the queer community called Allstora. The site is rebranding of ShopQueer.co, the brainchild of author and advocate Eric Cervini and drag performer and actor Adam Powell. Cervini will serve as CEO.

According to a press release, the company's mission is "to protect, promote, and empower all storytellers through an equitable compensation model and to uplift the voices of underrepresented groups, including LGBTQ+ people, women, and communities of color." Allstora will split profits with authors and, through a wholesale membership model, offer discounts of 30-50% on all books. This month, Allstora will also debut RuPaul's Book Club, a monthly subscription service featuring books curated by RuPaul.

From her comments, don't expect Lady Bunny to subscribe.

"Ru has a new, just announced book company called Allstora. The promo makes think you that this company is squarely on the left fighting book bans, fighting for the queer community, etc. Ru says in an insta video 'It's for your people, it's for our people','' Bunny writes.

"But when you look at the site, you can buy Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' (in several languages!), a children's book by the extremely transphobic Libs Of TikTok founder Chaya Raychik, several books by GOP stalwarts Mike Huckabee Sanders and Sarah Sanders, and even one Christian book called 'You Were Not Born That Way: It's Time To Break Free.' Those ain't MY people, Ru."

Bunny continues to write that Allstora "sells some books that are so objectionable that the company has added notes to these selections," then asking, "Why did you need the help of the community to do the right thing, Allstora? Why not just stop selling what many on the left consider to be hate speech?"

She concludes that this business model "sums up rainbow capitalism. Ru could've just said I want to sell all kindsa books and no one would have any issue with it."

Lady Bunny and Mama Ru have been friends since the mid 1980s when they met it Atlanta where the briefly worked as go-go boys together. "RuPaul revealed decades later in an episode of 'RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars' that he was the first person to ever put Lady Bunny in drag, technically making him her drag mother," read a report on ShowBixCheatSheet last April. When both moved to New York City in 1983, they were roommates and appeared in a number of low-budget films together. After "RPDR" was up and running, Lady Bunny appeared on the show as on judge. On Season Four, she appeared in a coffin when she was the subject of a roast where she was being memorialized as if she had died. And when asked about her relationship with RuPaul on a April 2023 episode of the Hot Takes & Deep Dives podcast, Lady Bunny spoke about her own career, as well as her relationship with RuPaul.

"We're friends in real life, we read each other when we're on camera or on stage," Bunny said. "That's what friends can do."
