Power

Let's talk about Alex Newell. The unapologetically talented Alex Newell -- the same character that took over the final season of the hit FOX television series "Glee" and practically, singlehandedly retransformed it (although we're sure that Ryan Murphy may have something to do with it). When Newell opened his mouth and let out those belting melodies, the "regular kid" from Massachusetts had to step out of the way -- a star had been born.

On "Power" the new EP, Newell proves he's got nothing to prove. Alex Newell has had standout releases collaborating with Clean Bandit on "Stronger" and The Knocks "Collect My Love." Both tracks had remarkably successful appeal both on a commercial front and as dance floor hits. Now that Newell is working to solidify an identity as an artist, this EP gathers five distinctly rich songs that have as much pop and punch as they the capacity to inspire a dance revolution.

Setting the pace for what's to follow, the EP's lead track is the single "This Ain't Over" which is adequately blends the best of commercial EDM with the driving groove of today's house and nu-disco for an electrifyingly dynamic lead in that has you hooked by the end of the refrain, and confirms Newell's genuine skills as a vocal artist are well intact. The promise is that it ain't over is guaranteed and by Track 4 "Devilish" Newell is commercial synched into your psyche.

Building on the momentum dramatically Newell's "Basically Over You (B.O.Y.)" is a throwback to 80s dance rhythms and wonderfully places his vocals at the center of a bass-heavy and deliciously produced disco anthem. Newell easily gives prominent dance divas including idols like Donna Summer and Chaka Khan a run for their money on this club-ready hit. Newell's mastery of dance isn't limited, the more soulful "Shame" has a deliberately slower production.

The EP wraps up with the already charting "Nobody To Love" which has been winning fans on the club scene for Newell. It's mostly a filler compared to the rest of the tracks on the EP, but leaves the listener hopeful that the next time that Alex Newell comes around there'll be a full-length offering, because without a doubt this talented rising star has indeed found a whole lot of somebodies to love!

Pop music as dance is rescued once again! Alex Newell indeed does have the power with charisma and talent to spare.
