New York State's Centennial Celebration of Women's Suffrage

Monday Nov 6, 2017

The New York City Department of Records & Information Services (DORIS) will hold a centennial event to honor the women who won the right to vote in New York State on November 6, 1917, and to recognize people fighting for justice today: 100 Years!

WomensActivism.nyc at DORIS has joined the Women's Salon, BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center and The Women's Resource Center at Borough of Manhattan Community to present 100 YEARS! Stay Tuned... an interactive theater celebration of speeches, poetry, dramatic writings, stories, and suffragist's recipes.

Created by the Women's Salon under the direction of JoAnne Akalaitis, the event incorporates multi-media sound and video installations, a live site-specific performance, an open mic, a suffrage sing-along and birthday cake. The evening features a multi-generational cast of 30 women and girls. Audience participation is encouraged.

NYC Department of Records and Information Services fosters civic life by preserving and providing access to the historical and contemporary records of New York City government, to ensure that City records are properly maintained following professional archival and record management practices and to make materials available to diverse communities both online and in person at the Municipal Library and Archives. WomensActivism.NYC is its five-year celebration of women's activism and the Women's Suffrage Centennial, culminating in a permanent catalog of women activists.

The Women's Resource Center at BMCC helps to promote and sponsor activities supporting women's health and well-being. Special programs, seminars, and workshops are designed to educate and bring awareness to the entire BMCC Community. Educational programs address topics such as leadership development, gender identity, wellness, domestic violence, stress management, parenting, relationships, and academia.

The Women's Salon is an informal group of women theater makers, activists, visual artists, producers and film makers who gather monthly to discuss work by and about women.

BMCC Tribeca PAC is Downtown Manhattan's premier presenter of the arts, reaching audiences from the college community, downtown residential and business communities, local schools, families, and audiences of all ages. BMCC Tribeca PAC strives to present a broad global perspective through the presentation of high-quality artistic work in music, theatre, dance, film and visual arts.

BMCC Tribeca PAC is located on the Borough of Manhattan Community College campus, 199 Chambers Street (between Greenwich Avenue & West Street) and is convenient to the 2/3, A/C/E and R/W subway lines and the New Jersey Path Train.

The Centennial Celebration will be held on Monday, November 6 from 6-8 p.m. at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, 199 Chambers Street, New York.
